Q&A What is the “Raryo-oh” ?

The Rarou-oh, featured in the Kawagoe Festival, is a renowned festival float in Kawagoe City, Saitama Prefecture. This grand float, known as “Rarou-oh,” is characterized by its immense size and elaborate decorations, serving as a symbol of the traditional Kawagoe Festival.

The Rarou-oh float is adorned with numerous sculptures and ornaments, and it is inspired by the historical figure of Liang Wang, a Chinese military general from the Edo period. It represents the historical background and significance associated with the festival. During the Kawagoe Festival, this float parades through the streets, visiting local shrines, and plays a central role in the festivities. Its beautiful decorations and impressive presence captivate many tourists and visitors.

The Nakacho people rather pronounce “蘭陵王” as “Raryo”  but ”Raryou-oh”.  It is a bit strange…:)
